Experience the Taste of Kenya’s Oldest Black-Owned Tea Farm
Welcome to Kenya’s oldest black-owned tea farm, where we take pride in producing some of the finest tea in the province. Our family has been cultivating the luscious rolling hills for three generations, overcoming the challenges of colonialism and oppression to establish a thriving business that we are proud to call our own.
Our Story of Resilience and Perseverance
Before Kenya gained independence, the white highlands were reserved for the most well-to-do settlers, and locals who were found within Karabaini after sunset were whipped and immediately escorted out. However, the dire straits of oppression started to ignite the flames of rebellion. My great grandfather’s oldest son sought refuge in America and wrote to his father about the struggles of black people in America and how they had gained their independence. These stories “radicalized” my great grandfather and caused the colonial government to mistrust him. They attacked him and his family, forcing his children to flee the country.
Resettling and Relocating to America and Kenya
My grandfather arrived in England and was responsible for the resettlement of the refugees. There, he met a nursing student whom he fell in love with and married. Their wedding was even gazetted. However, they had to relocate to New York, but this time they would be three instead of two. In New York, my mother was born just three years after Kenya gained independence. The country was growing, and my grandfather was called by the president to serve his country. He packed up his young family and began the process of repatriation back to Kenya.
Growing Our Farm, One Acre at a Time
While he was abroad, the government started offering low-interest loans to buy back the farms that the English had occupied. We took advantage of this opportunity and grew our farm one acre at a time, becoming Kenya’s oldest black-owned tea farm. We take pride in our heritage and are committed to producing the highest quality tea. We grow our tea with care and love, and invite you to taste the rich history and culture that is infused in every sip.
