Our Story

Riara Farm lies on the rolling hills of the Limuru highlands at an altitude of 7,000 ft. above sea level. The farm is owned by Mr. Joseph Karuga Koinange and Mrs. Grace Koinange.

The farm was bought in 1964, just one year after Kenya got its independence, the couple was one of the first indigenous Kenyans to own property on what was then known as the white highlands. In 1974 the couple planted the first 8 acres of tea. They have continued to increase the tea acreage which now stands at around 100 acres.

Riara farms main objective is to produce top quality Kenyan tea, the farm has a robust corporate social responsibility program that empowers all its workers to engage in economic self-improvement.

1964 - A New Beginning

Riara Farm was purchased by Mr. Joseph and Mrs. Grace Koinange, making them one of the first indigenous Kenyan couples to own land in the former “white highlands.” This marked the start of their legacy in Kenyan agriculture.

1974 - The Birth of Tea

The couple planted their first 8 acres of tea, laying the foundation for Riara Farm’s commitment to quality tea production. Their passion for sustainable farming began with these early plantings.

1990 - Growth and Expansion

Riara Farm expanded to 100 acres of tea cultivation, focusing on high-quality production and sustainable farming practices that would eventually become central to the farm’s mission.

2010 - Riara Tea Tours Emerges

Inspired by the farm’s success, Riara Tea Tours was founded, offering guests an immersive experience into Kenya’s rich tea culture and sustainable farming practices.
